We met back in 2005. Nikki was asked to help out the church worship teams by joining a new team who would play a different service every week. The worship team she joined was a band that was formed previously and needed another singer. Wings of Fire consisted of Chenin Garby (vocals), Jake Rashford (drums), Jake Brandt (bass), and Scott Newton (guitar).

We didn't really talk much even though we were in the band together. But on September 7th, 2006, Nikki was in class and bored out of her mind. She remembered that it was Scott's birthday, so she sent him a text message wishing him a happy one.

From then, we started talking more and hanging out outside of the band. Our first date was actually a failed band get-together. Nikki tried getting the band together to go see a movie. Jake, Jake, and Chenin couldn't make it, but Scott could. We got to the theater, and the time the movie was playing was different than what the Internet said. So we wound up going to Nikki house and watched "V for Vendetta". The movie was long, and then we wound up just talking after the movie was over for a few hours. It wasn't till three in the morning that Scott left.

The weeks following his birthday, we talked and spent a lot of time together. Eventually we had to make a decision about whether we should be a couple or just friends. It was a difficult talk because if things ended between us, things would be awkward with the band. We didn't want anything to be weird and didn't want to ruin the band. However, the conversation ended in a kiss and we are so happy we made that decision. It obviously was the right one!
